The Mathematic curriculum is central to many aspects of daily life. Within our federation, we want to ensure that all children see the importance of the mathematics skills they learn within school, apply them and build up their knowledge in order to prepare themselves for the future challenges.

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected subject that has been developed over centuries. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education provides our children a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.


The National Curriculum for mathematics, taught to Years 1 to 6, aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.


The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, taught to Foundation Stage 1 and 2, aims to ensure that all pupils:


  • are seen as a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.


  • learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.


  • learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and carers.


  • develop and learn in different ways. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities. Practitioners teach children by ensuring challenging, playful opportunities across the prime and specific areas of learning and development.
