Marshland Primary School

Sports Premium Funding 2016 – 2017

The dedicated Sport and PE Premium was introduced in primary schools in September 2013 with the aim to improve the provision of sports for children and young people. Schools have the freedom to choose how best to spend the money in order to do this but the funding can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Marshland Primary School received £8,680 for this year and we have decided to spend the money on developing the following areas:

  • Improving the quality of teaching and learning in Physical Education.
  • Increasing participation in sporting activities outside of the core curriculum, during lunchtimes and after school.
  • Improving pupils’ lifestyles and physical wellbeing.
  • Developing children as Playground Leaders.

Improving the quality of teaching and learning

The school will use the Sports Premium grant to raise the standard of teaching and learning in PE by providing high-quality professional development sessions for teachers. A sports coach will plan, deliver and assess children in PE lessons and the class teacher and support staff will participate in these lessons. This team-teach approach will equip staff at Marshland with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality PE lessons in the future. This is a cost effective way of ensuring the overall standard of P.E across the school improves and high standards are maintained.

This is the third year this improvement strategy has been in place and many class teachers have worked in partnership with Sports coaches, who have either been employed by the school or have been a provision purchased from an outside agency. The impact has been that teachers and support staff have learned a range of new skills across different sports and their confidence in delivery has improved.

Increasing participation in sporting activities outside of the core curriculum

The Sports Premium grant will also support the funding of an increased range of after school clubs for all ages. There is limited provision in the community and therefore, providing opportunities for Marshland children to engage positively in sports activities is essential. This also includes the cost of equipment and resources for these extra-curricular activities.  We aim to improve extra-curricular provision and use different coaches to deliver active, high-quality clubs.

We also promote inter school events and competitions, using some of the funding to develop sports teams who can compete with other schools in the pyramid/ area. The sports premium money helps to fund transport so that the costs are not passed on to parents. As a school, we have a large playing field so that we can invite other schools to participate in events here, but we also travel to tournaments and competitions elsewhere. We know our children enjoy being ambassadors for the school and thrive on the responsibility and sense of pride these opportunities allow.

Improving pupils' lifestyles and physical wellbeing

As a result of increased sporting participation, the pupils at Marshland Primary School will have improved health and wellbeing, whilst also benefiting from all the other positive values that sport promotes. In addition to encouraging increased physical activity among pupils, we will also ensure that we teach children about healthy lifestyles. The children will get at least six opportunities to cook in school in the children’s kitchen, making and preparing healthy meals.

Developing children as Playground Leaders

A group of Y5 and Y6 children will apply and train as Playground Leaders. Their main role will be to improve active play for our younger children at break and lunch times. They will ensure the children play co-operatively, they will lead playground games and they will teach the children basic games skills. The children will also develop their leadership skills and be positive role models for their younger peers. The premium will also help towards the cost of any additional resources.
